Small-ish Haku by aphid777 Small-ish Haku by aphid777
This was a rush project I did for a friend who is graduating from pharmacy school. He loves Miyazaki films and so I decided to make a smaller version of Haku as compared to my last one. This one is still at least about 30 inches long, which was (again) bigger than I was planning. I DID write notes down this time around, so I will eventually post a pattern. It will probably be a very rough pattern though since I was in such a rush but hopefully it will be understandable!

Of course, I had to take pictures of mini and huge Haku together so those will be up later because I've gotta go! =P

Both Haku's:

Also check out "Small-ish Haku" made by others!

This is a pretty rough pattern. I don't know what gauge wire I used (anything that can support the body and legs should work).  I also don't have exact measurements for the lengths of wire used for his body, legs, and whiskers since I was experimenting myself and ended up trimming off excess wire when needed. I would estimate that I used at least 30 inches of wire for his body, 5 inches of wire for his front legs, and 6 inches of wire for his back legs (thicker wire for his body and thinner in his legs). I'll let you decide how long you want his whiskers to be :)

I would err more on the side of cutting wires that are too long rather than too short because you can always trim excess wire.
I also bent the tips of the wires I used in Haku's body and limbs to prevent sharp edges from poking out.

Please let me know if I've made any mistakes! And PLEASEEE don't sell this pattern or product since I do not own this character! Let's share the love! :tighthug:

As usual, please credit me should you use or manipulate this pattern and please be respectful and don't sell the finished product since I don't own this character!  Thank you!

Head and Body:

**Crochet around the wire
**I like to keep my rounds in the center of his body (in this case, his underbelly) so in some areas, I added extra stitches to a round to keep the center consistent. There is a lot of room for flexibility so add stitches as you see fit :)

**Haku's horns are made of wire folded in half and wrapped with yarn, with more layers of yarn at the base of the horns.
**Haku's whiskers are also made of wire wrapped with yarn.
**Haku's mane is made of yarn that has been knotted on and brushed with a wire pet brush until fluffy :)

Also for this line:
-Sc around 32 times (14) Do I presume you mean do 32 rows of 14 stitches?
Vulpixyy Featured By Owner Sep 15, 2016
Did you do this in rounds joined rounds or in just a seamless spiral?

It's in the description.

I'm not sure how Aphid777 did their whiskers but I strung a long piece of wire through the nose (so that both whiskers are from one piece). I wrapped one side with yarn then sewed it through the stitch that the whisker went through and continued wrapping the other side.

There was a fair bit of wiggle to the whiskers so I'll be looking at how to more firmly attach them on the next one I'm making.

I would suggest using a bit of hot glue once you finish each whisker, that stuff is stronger than hot glue!

I'm in the process of making one for my boyfriend for his birthday. =) A lot of people have been asking about wire gauge. Initially I used 7 gauge wire in the body and it doesn't retain it's shape for long.

Someone else mentioned sewing more wire under the belly strip. I'm trying a piece of 7 gauge folded in half and a third piece twisted around it. It's not in place yet but it does feel much sturdier than just one piece.

Hope this helps. =)

Love this pattern and was meaning to try it a long time ago!
Airth06 Featured By Owner Jul 1, 2016
The folded 7 gauge with a third piece of 7 gauge wrapped around it and sewn into the belly strip works perfectly. He's kept his shape much better than before.

I'm finding a single piece of 7 gauge wire works well for the legs and supports the body.

Hopefully this helps anyone who's trying out this pattern. =D

Sorry, I was mistaken; it was 17 gauge wire. The 1 on the label was torn off. lol

when you say sc around 32 times does that mean 32 stitches or 32 rows of stitches?

Going to give this a shot (with a lot of alterations) to create Quetzalcoatal. I will send you pictures along the way if you would like to see. Yours was the best dragon that fit what I was looking for: rectangular head and serpentine body.
Otherwise, I'm adding wings and feathers

Hi, I'm working on this wonderful pattern and I have a question concerning the wiskers. I got that you wrap yarn around a wire but I dont understand how to "tie" the yarn at the end of the wire, you now, how to get a clean edge. I'm not quite sure how to explain this... Thanks again for all your patterns :D
Mo-Dragon Featured By Owner Aug 11, 2016  Student Digital Artist
I'm not sure how they did it, but I actually used a little glue. It was white yearn and white glue so it was impossible to see once it dried. Worked out rather well for me.

Hi I am loving this design and I'd like to try and crochet it. I was wondering if you could tell me a few things: What colours of yarn did you use and are his eyes made of felt? Also what size hook is an E hook 'cause here we only use sizes in milimeters so I don't know what size equals what letter. Hope to here from you.
Mo-Dragon Featured By Owner Aug 11, 2016  Student Digital Artist
Not the op but, E = 3.5mm. Haku's feet are a Mauve pink, his belly is a blue tinted grey and his mane is actually a teal color (I based this off the movie).
