***Edit: Skull Kid is not for sale and I am not taking commissions at this time! Sorry! :(

***Edit 2: Sorry, but I don't have a pattern for Skull Kid!  He was done free-hand because the directions were too complex to write out.  The only patterns I have are available in the "Patterns" folder of my gallery.

Just to demonstrate that he is indeed poseable :)

So, this is my pride and joy that I've been working on for a few weeks, many long hours a day. This bud is about 18" tall. Add a few more inches with the hat. He does have wire support because I wanted him to be poseable, including his darn fingers. His mask is removable (you can see him unmasked in the mutli-view link I've provided below). The mask details and Skull Kid's face are needle-felted because I wanted them to REALLY stand out. The face is one of the more important things to me, which is why I usually make eyes and such out of felt, or as of late, needle-felting. And plus I can't embroider.. Am I the only one who has problems controlling where the thread stays in crocheted works?? ._. Whatever the case, I seem to suck at embroidering, while needle-felting makes me happy because the results are much better for me.

The Legend of Zelda series has got to be my favorite game series of all time. I've been intending to make some of the characters from the games, but I waited it out because I wanted to improve my crocheting skills before giving it a shot. Definitely have to do justice to the characters of the greatest series ever! As I've said before, I chose to make Skull Kid first because:

1. He doesn't have a human face, which I'm not quite ready to try yet, but I still get to ease into making something with a humanoid form
2. Majora's mask is insanely cool

I hope you guys like how he turned out! I definitely gave it my best effort!

This is an amazing piece of art! I saw a crochet Skull Kid at a gaming convention in July of 2014, I started Googling for more examples, found yours and fell in love with the felt face. I have several colors of roving left over from a past project, so I may try to make a face as well, but I have never felted an art piece, wish me luck! I am going to attempt to make this, this year for me and my husband to enjoy.

I was originally going to reply to an earlier comment of yours where you talked about how many hours go into something like this. I crochet a lot of hats for sale and I made dolls a few times, I loathed trying to finish an 18 inch doll with clothes and hair and all the trimmings in one or two weeks and feeling like I wasn't making anything for the time I put into it, all those single crochet stitches and no time to enjoy it. I think people really thought it would take a couple of days and that I was joking when I said I needed two or three weeks. Smells Like Teen Spirit

Thanks for stopping by and for the nice comment!  I'm glad you like him so much! :)  I think most people who haven't crocheted or crafted before don't realize how much time it takes to make handmade stuff like crocheted clothing and dolls.  I wouldn't doubt that it took you weeks to finish a detailed 18-inch doll!  By the time I'm done with any of my dolls, I never want to let them go! :XD:  At this point, I've ended up hoarding way more than I need =P

Yes very much! *o* I would totally pay like $35 or $40 to have that! lol Or is that not enough? Maybe I'm too cheap. XD I try to be reasonable/fair though. X3

Most people don't realize how long these things take to make I think.. :XD:  I think I spent 50+ hours on this, at least 15 hours alone on the mask, so in the end, it isn't really worth selling because even at $500, I would be making less than minimum wage.  That's why I do it just for the joy of creating rather than as a business :)

Oh wow. $500 is a lot more than what I was thinking. XD I guess it's because even though I spend like a week on one drawing, I would only sell it for maybe $10 at the most just because I'm not really confident enough that my work is worth more than that, plus I try to keep in mind that money is pretty tight for a lot of people right now so when I sell something, I don't wanna sell it for really high because one, I don't think my work is good enough to sell for really high, and two, I try to keep the customer's satisfaction in mind, knowing that not everyone can afford a $30 drawing or even a $500 sewn character. lol But yeah, I don't sell my work (at least not yet) because I don't think my art is good enough to sell (especially after seeing so many artists on here who have so much talent and are far better then me) so it gets pretty discouraging... and there's also the problem that I don't wanna turn my hobby into a chore. I draw for fun and it's something I enjoy doing. I don't want to end up selling my art and have it feel like a chore or work because I don't enjoy drawing things that other people tell me to draw. I enjoy drawing what I want to draw, not something else that someone wanted me to draw for them. Sometimes I will do commissions or requests and I always stress over it because I'm always worried that they won't like how it comes out, so it loses the "fun" factor in the drawing and it makes it less enjoyable for me. That is why I never want to go to art school because I don't want to draw what teachers ask me to draw, I want to draw what I want, how I want, because I believe my work looks much better with more feeling into it rather then having it look like I stressed over it or got bored with it. lol

Gotta agree with what you said :) It's part of the reason why I don't want to do commissions either. I like to work on what I want, when I want. Deadlines would definitely add to the pressure and take away from the fun >_<

Wow! This is amazing- the needle-felting looks like 600X better than the embroidery I did when I tried this. You also have really nice edging on all the little pieces. You clearly put lots of time and love into this! I am every kind of impressed- great job!

Thanks a lot! Your Skull Kid was pretty amazing. I could never pull off any form of embroidery.. heck.. mouth lines often gives me problems.. it just never seems to turn out the way I imagined in my head so kudos to you! Thank you also for noticing the edges. I get a little picky with edge neatness so I like to crochet along those surfaces as well. The consequence is that I have tons of loose ends to hide when I'm done, which takes up a large chunk of my time -_-

Embroidery is effing difficult! It's taken a lot of practice for me to get my embroidery to come out even remotely right- the texture of crochet really doesn't help with that. I think it's fantastic that you've found an alternative approach! I can't wait to see your next humanoid doll. :eager:

I agree a thousand times over.. Embroidery is kind of unforgiving, in my opinion. After I've spent hours working on a crocheted piece, the last thing I want is to make a mess of it with some sloppy embroidery. It ends up discouraging me from practicing more, though I know I'll never get better without the practice. It's quite a cycle >_<

And thanks again! I'm most definitely looking forward to making more humanoid dolls :)
